Roxbury is incorporated as a city.
March 25, 1846
It becomes the fourth city in Massachusetts, after Boston, Salem, and Lowell. The new government is made up of a mayor, eight aldermen, and 24 city councilors. John Clark is the first mayor. He is succeeded by Henry A.S. Dearborn in 1846. Roxbury continues as separate city until it is annexed by Boston in 1868.*
